Here is the deal...
I am trying to decide if I should take my good camera to Cancun or just take my point and shoot.
Help me out...
Reasons not to take my good camera...
1. The camera cost more than twice that our trip costs.
2. I don't want to have to babysit my camera the whole time...like when we are on the beach and stuff like that.
3. Really don't want it to be stolen...or broken...or sandy...
Reasons to take my good camera...
1. We are going to Mayan ruins and would love to take some majorly cool pictures there...
2. I would love to take beautiful pictures at the beach...sunset/sunrise...silouettes...
3. I think I would really regret not taking it...
BUT
I don't regret not taking a good camera when we went to Hawaii or on our cruise...but at that time I didn't have as good of a camera that I have now...
So here are a couple pictures I just took to compare...keep in mind both cameras were used with flash...so it isn't the best example for the quality of pictures each individual camera can do...more to just see the difference in the two...
So if you wouldn't mind...please give me your input...
What would you do???

Kim, with either camera I know you will get some pretty cool pictures!
Either way, don't let Brent hold it, he may ditto what happened in Hawaii!
:)
I jsut faced this decision when we went to Disney World. Kevin vetoed me and my nice camera stayed home. We did alot of walking and it would have been a big pain. I am really happy with the pics that we got with just my point and shoot. I don't know if this helped at all.
Tough decision! Your fancy camera takes amazing pictures, but then again, that might just be YOU taking the good photos. So the point and shoot can probably take some pretty good ones too!
If I was you, I would worry to much about it getting stolen or broken and then I'd feel like I still had kids with me on the trip. So, my advice... take the point and shoot!
By the way, what kind of nice camera do you have? Your photography really is beautiful.
I took my nice camera with my kids to Yellowstone, and one of them threw Old Faithful sand in it. If you are going for a photo shoot, take the nice camera. If you are going for vacation sake, take the point and shoot. I'd hate to have to babysit my camera while on vacation! You can get some really nice shots with the PS. National Geographic did it with 35mm... You can do it too! It's always a catch 22 being a photog though, because you know what you're capable of! Good luck on the decision. I'm sure the pictures will turn out great either way!
I vote point and shoot. You can get great pictures with point and shoot, and even though it is Cancun, it is still a foreign country!
Point and Shoot. On our cruise to Mexico my camera really took a beating and on half our excursions cameras weren't allowed anyway because they wanted you to buy THEIR pictures.
SLR's are great, but so is photoshop and Picasa, where you can make a lot of alterations to simple point-and-shoot photographs.
Also, get a cute hard case that will clip on to your shorts too, if you're doing ANY hiking, climbing, sight-seeing or active things.
HAVE FUN, I'm so jealous!
If it were me I wouldn't want to worry about the expensive camera on a trip like that. You take amazing pictures with the point and shoot as well. Have a wonderful time and know that I'm breaking the tenth commandment right now (thou shalt not covet!)
I'd take the point and shoot. If you brought your Good camera it would be like bringing a baby with you that you have to watch and be conserned about the entire time. Leave the worries behind and enjoy your vacation you lucky girl.
That's such a tough one! I've been thinking about the same thing for a summer trip we're planning. I think you'll probably be more relaxed with your P&S... and you'll still get some great pictures. Especially since P&S cameras do even better outside than in and you'll be doing lots of landscapes. HAVE SO MUCH FUN!!!
Like everyone else.....point and shoot for sure. Don't waste your energy worrying about your camera and taking the most perfect pictures. You are going for a vacation.....relax and enjoy. Have fun!!!
This is Heather (Smith) from good old Springville. I've been reading your blog for awhile now and have really enjoyed it. You have adorable kids.
My advice would be to see if there is a safe in your room. If there is I would bring both cameras. Then you can leave your nice one in the safe when you don't want to have to worry about babysitting it but bring it when you know you're going to want it. Then you have the best of both worlds.
i guess you have to ask yourself what's more important, the pictures or the memories? if you take the dslr & you're constantly worrying about it, you may never be able to fully let go & just enjoy yourself.
Point and shoot. The pictures aren't as good, but the memories they represent won't be diminished because of the pics.
Kim I think the point and shoot has better color and clarity, but don't depend on me I don't see things as good as I used to. Grandma "Ene"
I vote Point and shoot, speaking from experience I lost my camera on a zip line in the jungles of Mexico last year! Theres no telling what could happen I would save your super camera for safer adventures!
